No algorithm. Just word of mouth.

left917 is the High Country's independent read: local news, music, culture, and what's on, all in one place. No app, no login, no ads. And we're writing our own stuff now, not just rounding up everyone else's. Putting on an event? Share your calendar and we'll keep it on the air. Saw a flyer for something that isn't here? Thu, Oct. 8.

At 1:30pm, Postcard Protesters meet at the Watauga County Public Library to write postcards to Watauga voters before the midterms. At 4pm, Slime Time at the Ashe County Public Library in West Jefferson has kids making creepy slimes and a pumpkin that throws up.

Tonight, at 6pm, the App Theatre's Hitchcocktober run continues with North by Northwest, and the horn quartet CORolina plays Broyhill Music Center. At 6:30pm, the documentary Theory of Change screens in the App Theatre's Mast Store Community Room, following three working-class North Carolina mothers building trust the hard way. At 7pm, Figure Drawing Night at Huzzah Books is $10, 18+, with supplies from the Turchin Center. At 8pm, APPS throws a Silent Disco in the Grandview Ballroom for Homecoming week. At 9pm, Vermillion Green, Admiral, Blissful Thoughts, and What a Waste play four bands for $5 on Blowing Rock Rd.

Worth knowing

Registration for Nov. 3 closes tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 9, at 5pm. Moved, turned 18, or never got around to it? One minute, one lookup. Miss it and you can still register and vote in the same trip once early voting opens Oct. 15.

Old US-421 is closed in both directions between Marion Thomas Rd and N Fork Rd in Watauga County for construction, all lanes.

New from us. C. W. Stoneking. Hokum blues and a zombie song from the wrong side of the world.

Beech Mountain's Fred Pfohl, founder of Fred's General Mercantile and the town's first elected mayor, died Oct. 3 at 81.

Tomorrow the site travels back to 2006, App State's three-straight-titles era, for Homecoming. It lasts through Saturday night.

Book of the Week cover ◆ Book of the Week · with Huzzah Books Jefferson and or Mussolini Ezra Pound Pound's 1933 case that Jefferson and Mussolini were running the same play with different names. Read as literature it's a mess, mostly worth it as a document: modernism's most famous poet putting his fascist sympathies on paper in his own words, years before the worst of it landed. Not a recommendation of the politics, a primary source on how a brilliant mind talked itself into them. Read the pick →
