Biologists working in the Nantahala National Forest in Graham County captured endangered bats for the first time in more than a decade during a search for surviving bat colonies. The discovery was made by researchers with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, U.S. Forest Service and Brown Environmental.

Bats deserve better than their reputation, and this is a genuine flicker of hope. The mountain colonies these biologists were hunting had been all but wiped out, and nobody had caught one of these endangered bats in the North Carolina mountains in more than ten years. Now they have. Two Christmases ago I hauled our tree down from the garage attic and found a bat clinging to the back of it, and I was terrified and thrilled in the same breath. Get up close and the teeth are unreal. Root for the little guys on this one.
