★ Why we picked this

App State's Dark Sky Observatory opens its telescopes Saturday night, Sept. 12, from 8 to 10 p.m. This is the actual thing, a chance to look at what the sky actually looks like when the light pollution shuts down, which most of us have never seen. Boone sits high enough that it matters. Go bring binoculars if you have them, or go empty-handed. Either way, the stars will still be there.

This one is right down the middle for us.
