Early Monday morning, ZRC Skate got the kind of call no small business wants. A state trooper reached the Boone skate shop around 1:30 a.m. to say a driver had slammed into the shop's camp van, parked out front, and spun it into the building. According to ZRC, the driver was an intoxicated 18-year-old. Everyone came out safe.
The van did not. ZRC says it and the building both took heavy damage, and the shop is now working with insurance to line up a rental so summer camp can run as scheduled this coming week.
"It hurts a lot when someone else's bad decisions affect your livelihood," the shop wrote on Instagram. The van, bought last summer from a Boone church, had carried ZRC campers on new adventures all over the High Country.
ZRC has a GoFundMe going for repairs and cleanup, with a modest $1,600 goal. Anything raised beyond that goes to Blake's Backyard, a memorial ramp project honoring a former ZRC crew member.
