The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg issued a special weather statement on August 11 at 9:10 p.m. for a cluster of strong thunderstorms moving southeast at 40 mph from near Beech Mountain toward the Erwin area. Wind gusts up to 40 mph were expected from the storms.
