On Friday, November 6, the Appalachian Theatre, Awesome Space, Appalachian State University’s High Country Humanities committee, and Toy Sheep Microcinema present two genre films, the superhero comedy COSTUMES (Holden Weihs, 2026) and the noir BY THE STARS OF SAINT MATTHEW (Grant Tracey, 2025). These works came to our attention because COSTUMES’ screenwriter, Daniel Mosakewicz, is an ASU alum and a former student (and current friend) of Toy Sheep programmer Craig Fischer, while SAINT MATTHEW director and writer Grant Tracey and Craig have been comrades since graduate school at the University of Illinois. Nepotism, you say? After you see these movies, you’ll call this double-bill a unique and enjoyable night of entertainment!

This event will take place at 8:30pm (doors open at 8pm) in the Mast Community Room of the Appalachian Theatre at 559 West King Street, Boone. This event is FREE and open to the public, and all Toy Sheep shows are recommended for adults only.

COSTUMES wonders, “How do superheroes spend their leisure time?” and gives us a playful answer: they attend a Halloween get-together, where they don’t even need to change out of their crime-fighting uniforms. Complications ensue when these heroes party. After we screen COSTUMES, we’ll be joined via Zoom by director Holden Weihs and writer Mosakewicz for a Q & A session.

Then we’ll follow with BY THE STARS OF SAINT MATTHEW, a film noir chamber piece that opens with Iris Wellman, a small-town vet, grudgingly nursing a wounded criminal back to health. From there, the film expands to encompass both thrills and a surprisingly emotional, spiritual vibe. Grant Tracey will be present at the screening, to answer questions about SAINT MATTHEW and maybe, just maybe, read a little of his hardboiled fiction.

The evening will also feature our Little Free Library (pick up a free book or three) and our FILM ZINE POP-UP, featuring publications like 10 BEST REVENGE MOVIES DIRECTED BY WOMEN, DAVID LYNCH EXPLAINS DAVID LYNCH MOVIES, DUPLEX PLANET, ONE PUNK’S GUIDE TO STAR TREK, and the brand-new third issue of RITUAL, L.A.’s hottest cinema zine. Some zines are free, and others are cheaply priced, with all proceeds supporting Toy Sheep’s schedule of free, bizarre audio-visual events.
