Hitchcock, forge fires, and funk

Ensemble Stage stages The Hitchcock Radio Hour tonight at the Historic Banner Elk School, 7 to 8. Two tales of horror and suspense, played like a 1940s live broadcast, with spooky background music and sound effects.

Today

8am Youth Makers Market at the Watauga County Farmers Market, until noon, young artists selling their own work.
11am Knifemaking and leatherworking demos at the Original Mast Store in Valle Crucis, until 5. Watch a knife get hammered out, then watch the sheath get stitched to fit it. Rain date is Sunday.
2pm Brikhouse Fall Craft Market, the first one ever, until 6:30, with local vendors.
3:30pm Wordkeepers at the Ashe Arts Center in West Jefferson, music from Scot Pope and Loftin Hargrave, then the writers' gathering at 4. Free.
7pm The Hitchcock Radio Hour at the Historic Banner Elk School, until 8.
9pm Reveri3, Porcelain Parrot, and Good Knights Rest at Lily's Snack Bar, three bands, $5.
9:30pm Dr Bacon with My Gal Monday at Boone Saloon, Appalachian funk and rock, $5, 21+.

More spooky nights are on the High Country Haint List.

Look up

The Hunter's Moon is full Monday. It rises around sunset and stays up all night, and its glare washes out meteors and the Milky Way, so it's a night for the moon itself. Where to aim.

Worth knowing

Early voting sites in Watauga and Avery are closed Saturday and Sunday and reopen Monday. Ashe is open today, 8am to 3pm, and closed Sunday. Early voting ends Saturday, Oct. 31, at 3pm. Sites and hours. No excuses.

Boone Town Council meets Wednesday at 5pm in Council Chambers. The 5pm work session covers enforcement of town ordinances on Oak Street and next steps on the workforce housing ownership application. At 6, council considers submitting a rezoning application for 155 WYN Way and picks chairs for the Historic Preservation and Planning commissions (the notice).

Our editor Evan Fleischer went to see Afroman at the Boone Saloon, got quoted $100 at the door, and filed a review anyway. The verdict is I did not see the show/10. Read it.
