Amy Heflin of Fleetwood, a retired nurse, won the Wallace & Peggy Carroll Vigilance Volunteer of the Year Award from New River Conservancy for her work protecting one of the country's oldest rivers. She has spent years in the water, testing it, watching it, fighting to keep it clean. The rest of us owe her a debt we have not yet paid. The best way is to find out what she is doing and join her.
