Appalachian State's Boone campus lost about 1,000 students this fall, a 6% drop from last year. But the real numbers are buried in the fine print, online enrollment, graduate students, transfers, and first-generation students all hit records. So the university is not shrinking, it is reshaping. Fewer bodies on the mountain, more of them studying remotely, more of them coming through the back door. What this means for a town that built itself around a residential campus is the question we've got to start discussing.
