Gas prices in the High Country reached $3.86 per gallon for regular unleaded this week, up 17 cents from the previous low of $3.69 reported on July 29. The statewide North Carolina average has increased by approximately $1 since last year.

Regular unleaded hit $3.86 at the pump here Tuesday morning, up seventeen cents since late July and roughly a dollar higher than a year ago. The state average has climbed along with it. Nobody likes paying more to drive to work, but the arc matters more than the snapshot, gas prices move, they always have, and so do the stories we tell ourselves about why.
