The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for portions of the North Carolina High Country and surrounding areas, including Watauga County, effective from 5:48 p.m. on August 2 through 2 a.m. on August 3. The watch was issued due to the possibility of flooding from excessive rainfall in the region.
