The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for portions of northwest North Carolina and southwestern Virginia, including Watauga County, beginning August 11 at 1:34 a.m. and lasting until August 13 at 8 a.m. The watch was issued due to the possibility of flooding from excessive rainfall in the region.
