Rain came through and it mattered.
Eight counties woke up drought-free this week, and statewide we went from 32 extreme drought zones down to 11 in a single push. That's the kind of turn the mountains needed. The creek levels know it, the land knows it, and so do we.
Watauga, Ashe, and Wilkes are holding at severe drought (D2). Alleghany, Avery, and Caldwell got the downgrade to moderate (D1).
