The North Carolina Department of Transportation says more than 99 percent of roads damaged by Hurricane Helene have reopened. Several major reconstruction projects continue in western North Carolina, including work on Interstate 40 in the Pigeon River Gorge.

Nearly all of the roads Helene wrecked have reopened, NCDOT says, but the serious work continues. I-40 through the Pigeon River Gorge is still being rebuilt, alongside other major projects scattered through the mountains. We have gotten most of the way back.
The steady march to the finish line continues one day at a time.
