Drought Monitor Update — Thursday September 17, 2026

North Carolina's drought conditions worsened this week, reversing improvements that had accumulated since late May. Five counties that had been drought-free fell back to Abnormally Dry status, and drought classifications deteriorated across multiple levels in the state. Avery County in the High Country was among the areas affected.
