Hyper-local news & culture
No algorithm. Just word of mouth.
left917 is the High Country's independent read: local news, music, culture, and what's on, all in one place. No app, no login, no ads. And we're writing our own stuff now, not just rounding up everyone else's. Putting on an event? Share your calendar and we'll keep it on the air. Saw a flyer for something that isn't here? Send us the photo.

Running all October
The High Country Haint List. Haunted trails, ghost tours and a live Rocky Horror shadowcast. Everything spooky between here and Oct. 31, updated as the flyers go up. Read it →
Early voting runs through Sat, Oct. 31, 3pm. Watauga and Avery sites close the weekends of Oct. 17–18 and 24–25. Ashe stays open those Saturdays, 8am–3pm. Sites and hours.
Summer checks out Friday night. It's 75 and sunny Friday afternoon, then a wind off the northwest kicks in with gusts to 39 mph, and Saturday tops out near 48. Dig out the flannel before the rallies.
Ellie K is our Drop of the Week. Pose is a transition EP, indie on the way to a harder sound. Birdie caught Ellie K at Lily's last month, pink ribbon bow wrapped around the mic. The High Country music scene gets a home of its own here. On Rotation is where local artists drop their records, and the bands page shows who's playing next.
The new bands page is on the air, built in partnership with Shred Boone to lift up the High Country music scene. Every band with a show coming up is on it, and a tap on a name pulls up all their dates.
Missing a band? Get it on the dial. Add your act with your genre, hometown, a sentence about you and a logo. An editor reads every one before it goes up. Run a venue that isn't on left917? Send us your calendar so your shows land on the page.
We think the daily rundown matters, but we respect your scroll. So the picks and the news now live in the Daily Update.
