Tonight, Huzzah Books' book club takes on César Aira's Ema, the Captive at 7pm, free. The App Theatre keeps its Halloween-month screenings going all week, Shadow of a Doubt Tuesday, free Maximum Overdrive Wednesday, North by Northwest Thursday, Beetlejuice Friday, all at 6pm. Thursday also brings the documentary Theory of Change at 6:30pm and APPS' Silent Disco in the Grandview Ballroom at 8pm.
Friday, Huzzah throws Plov Part Two, free, cooking from 11am and ready around 3 to 4. That night Resonant Mirage, Inquest, Rylee Bapst, and Admiral play the Leif Erikson Day jam at Betsy's Barn in Todd at 7pm. Sunday, the App State Jazz Ensemble plays the App Theatre at 5pm.
New from us. Howard Street’s social district could go downtown-wide. The downtown board has been weighing a bigger map than the Howard and Depot blocks, and the town says it is still too early to pin down a timeline.
Blowing Rock's Town Cleanup Week runs through Thursday. Crews pick up old appliances, yard debris, mattresses, furniture and grills, and leaves go out separate from branches.
Maintenance on US-221 hits both directions between Deerfield Rd and Possum Hollow Rd Tuesday night, all lanes affected. A debris removal project will clear 769 acres of hurricane-damaged material near Boone along the Parkway to cut wildfire risk.
The N.C. Council of the American Postal Workers Union is organizing an effort to save the Fleetwood Post Office, closed since Helene.

Read as literature it's a mess, mostly worth it as a document: modernism's most famous poet putting his fascist sympathies on paper in his own words, years before the worst of it landed. Not a recommendation of the politics, a primary source on how a brilliant mind talked itself into them.
