The farms and headwater streams around Valle Crucis have stayed more or less intact for generations, which does not happen by accident. It happens because the Valle Crucis Conference Center and Blue Ridge Conservancy have spent years locking down the land, keeping the rural character and the water clean while development pressure mounts everywhere else in the mountains. This is conservation work that looks like nothing is happening, which is exactly the point.
