Forty-nine years running and the woolly worms still show up in October to have their fuzzy bodies judged by a crowd that takes the whole thing seriously. Banner Elk's festival has expanded the kids' side of things this year, added education programming, and kept the actual Appalachian tradition intact instead of turning it into a photo op. Downtown, both days, the real deal.
