The Littlest Gay Bookshop is decked out for Halloween, and to help you get into the spirit, we have some queer spooky season book recommendations. These titles are available in the shop, or can be purchased through bookshop.org or Libro.fm in support of The Littlest Gay Bookshop or your indie bookstore of choice.
Take an eerie trip with Jessica’s family to the remote island of Hasenhurst, where life is idyllic and steeped in tradition. Unfortunately, the town is not as it seems in this satirical queer folk horror novel. This is the perfect story for the reader looking for something unique, a little strange, and very atmospheric.
Indigenous author, Tiffany Morris, describes her novella as a “swampcore horror” exploring grief and regret. Rita returns to her father’s home for an artist residency as she processes her grief. She won’t get much rest though, because…. what does she hear? Is that a body being dragged through the woods outside her window? Green Fuse Burning is a quick and immersive read, and it’s best to go into the book without knowing too much!
Yadriel is determined to prove to his Latinx family that he is a real brujo. To prove himself, he completes a family ritual on his own. Instead of summoning the spirit of a murdered family member, he’s called upon the spirit of the school’s bad boy. And, boy, does he have some unfinished business. This young adult romance has just enough magic and tension to keep you guessing from start to end.
Bridget Morrissey is the queen of sweet sapphic romances. Everything She Does is Magic is set in a small town that commits fully to the Halloween spirit each fall. Darcy lives to celebrate Halloween and to help to run her family’s small business. Nobody expected her to date the local broody witch, Anya. Including Anya herself. This young adult romance explores family pressure and expectations amid pumpkin carving contests, witch paintings, and just a bit of spooky season romance.
If you grew up wishing you could move to Halloweentown, this sapphic paranormal romance is for you! Harlow was thrilled to move to Maple Hollow, a small town her sister promised her was steeped in “real magic.” But she finds herself getting more than she bargained for after a run in with the local vampires and other magical beings. She’s about to get out of town when she bumps into Jordyn, and sparks fly immediately. There’s just one problem… Jordyn has summoned her ex girlfriend and is now being haunted by her past romance. Is she ready to move on? Can she share the spirit of her ex?
