The Blue Ridge Opry will host a special fiddlers convention at the Ashe Civic Center in West Jefferson on Friday at 7:30 p.m., featuring classic country music performances.

Ashe County has been string-band country since before there were records to play it on. Frank Blevins and his Tar Heel Rattlers cut sides in the 1920s. Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Ola Belle Reed carried the sound out of these hills and into the canon. The Blue Ridge Opry keeps that lineage on its feet, Kelley Breiding's retro-country variety show, banjo and comedy and buck dancing and a straight nod to the early Grand Ole Opry, built on the plain idea that you shouldn't have to drive to Nashville to hear the real thing. Friday night it kicks off the Ashe County Bluegrass and Old Time Fiddlers Convention at the Ashe Civic Center, and your ticket carries over to Saturday's fiddling at Ashe Park.
