The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for August 17 from 7:18 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. EDT covering an area stretching from near Newland through Spruce Pine to Marion and southwest of Asheville. The storms were moving eastward at the time of the warning.
