The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for portions of northwest North Carolina and southwest Virginia, including Watauga County and surrounding areas, due to the possibility of flooding from excessive rainfall. The watch remained in effect from August 12 at 12:32 p.m. until August 13 at 8 a.m.
