Sunny and 72 once the morning fog lifts. The Watauga Arts Council keeps the day going with Open Studio from 9am to noon, then Yarn Circle from noon to 3pm, both at its Shadowline Dr studio. App State's Visiting Writers Series runs 2 to 5pm.
Tonight, at 5pm, the Wilkes Agricultural Fair opens its gates in North Wilkesboro for four nights of carnival rides, a midway, and ag exhibits. At 5:30pm, the Arts Council launches its Artist Talk Series at Betty's Biscuits with Nysie Hurst, and Draw Club meets at Sumting Tattoo until 7pm. At 6pm, the App Theatre screens the 1986 cult classic Maximum Overdrive, free.

Police are investigating after a human skull was found near Winkler Creek in Boone. The remains have been sent to the medical examiner. We'll carry updates as they come. The story.
Homecoming 2026 is on all week at App State, through Saturday's 1pm kickoff against Old Dominion. From Friday the site goes full 2006.
Registration for Nov. 3 closes Friday, Oct. 9, at 5pm. Miss it and you can still register and vote in the same trip once early voting opens Oct. 15 and runs through Oct. 31. Absentee ballot requests close Tue, Oct. 20, at 5pm. Election Day is Tue, Nov. 3. Sites, hours, and everything else.
