No algorithm. Just word of mouth.

left917 is the High Country's independent read: local news, music, culture, and what's on, all in one place. No app, no login, no ads. And we're writing our own stuff now, not just rounding up everyone else's. Putting on an event? Share your calendar and we'll keep it on the air. Saw a flyer for something that isn't here? Worth knowing

Boone Town Council meets Wednesday at 9am in Council Chambers, and the first thing up is Ridgehouse. The Town's agenda packet lists 332 units and 716 bedrooms on about 63 acres along the 105 Bypass, with a request for annexation and zoning. It's an informal discussion, not a vote. Our breakdown of the packet has the numbers. Council also holds a public hearing on closing out the Deck Hill water tank grant and hears a resident's plan to reverse traffic on a block of Howard Street. What's on the agenda.

Early voting opens Thursday. Our guide, Marching to Early Voting in the High Country, has where each march and rally meets and where it ends, starting with Thursday's 5:30pm Voterfest march from Howard Hall. Saturday, No Kings: Vote Early runs 4–6pm at the Ag Center with speakers, bands, dancing, and a community art project, then a Honk N Wave on King Street until 6:45pm. Sites and hours.

The Littlest Gay Bookshop picked five queer reads for spooky season, from a swampcore novella to a sapphic Halloweentown romance. The list.
