Hyper-local news & culture

No algorithm. Just word of mouth.

left917 is the High Country's independent read: local news, music, culture, and what's on, all in one place. No app, no login, no ads. And we're writing our own stuff now, not just rounding up everyone else's. Putting on an event? Share your calendar and we'll keep it on the air. Saw a flyer for something that isn't here? Worth knowing

Blowing Rock's Town Cleanup Week runs through Thursday. Crews pick up old appliances, yard debris, mattresses, furniture and grills, and leaves go out separate from branches.

Maintenance on US-221 hits both directions between Deerfield Rd and Possum Hollow Rd Tuesday night, all lanes affected. A debris removal project will clear 769 acres of hurricane-damaged material near Boone along the Parkway to cut wildfire risk.

The N.C. Council of the American Postal Workers Union is organizing an effort to save the Fleetwood Post Office, closed since Helene.

Book of the Week cover ◆ Book of the Week · with Huzzah Books Jefferson and or Mussolini Ezra Pound Pound's 1933 case that Jefferson and Mussolini were running the same play with different names. Read as literature it's a mess, mostly worth it as a document: modernism's most famous poet putting his fascist sympathies on paper in his own words, years before the worst of it landed. Not a recommendation of the politics, a primary source on how a brilliant mind talked itself into them. Read the pick →
