Friday is Dolly Parton Day in Boone. Town Council proclaimed it Wednesday night and picked 9/25 for "9 to 5," which lands a month to the day after we lost her. Dolly grew up in a one-room cabin in Sevier County, Tennessee, the fourth of twelve kids, and never once pretended she came from anywhere else. She turned that into songs the whole world knows by heart, then turned the money into free books mailed to little kids through her Imagination Library. When Helene tore through these hills, she showed up for us. The mayor's proclamation asks everyone in town to do "One Good Deed for Dolly." Birdie drew her. That's one.
